History of landscapes

Landscapes and centuries

The territory of the Community of Communes of the Guebwiller Region not only has a rich built heritage, but also natural resources that can be read in the landscape. This landscape heritage is divided into several elements of varying importance depending on the century.

The most important of these is unquestionably the wine-growing heritage: the vines have been a key part of the economy of Florival since the Middle Ages and viticulture has punctuated the life of the inhabitants of this territory until today. Then comes the “green heritage”, which comes in forests, parks and gardens. These last two are relatively numerous in the cities of the territory and are often the result of the initiative of bourgeois or industrialists wishing to embellish their cities in the XNUMXth century.e and XXe centuries.

Less attractive at first sight but just as important in the history of the territory, the industrial heritage comes in disused or reused factories, in workers' towns or in the remains of railway lines, signs that are perfectly legible in the landscape of Florival d 'today.

Finally, one finds in the hills which surround the latter two other elements on which it is not uninteresting to lean: the quarries, the last visible traces of the search for raw materials (in particular sandstone) having been used for the construction of number of historic buildings, and the altitude habitat which, according to the marcairies and farmhouse inns scattered here and there, reminds us of a traditional way of life in the valleys in the XNUMXthe century.
