The castle and its park

The park was laid out from the XNUMXthe century for the pleasure of the prince-abbots of Murbach. Francophiles, they had a regular leisure park laid out.

At the end of the XVIIIe century, its geometric composition and its floral design recall the garden of Versailles. An orangery, an orchard and a vegetable garden complete the food-producing part of the park.

The various buyouts and the probable lack of maintenance lead to the disappearance of this first garden. As tastes evolved, the Schlumberger family transformed it in the XNUMXe century, in a landscaped park. Henry Schlumberger, passionate about botany, installs his collection of tree species there, but also of exotic plants in greenhouses. He also developed bucolic viewpoints there, notably with the development of a Swiss chalet in 1868. Léon Schlumberger, his nephew, continued his work.

Today, some of these so-called “remarkable” trees are still visible in the park: Giant Sequoias, Yellow Pine, Bald Cypress, Atlas Cedar… These mingle with the seasons with other species: Magnolias Grandiflora, Tulipier from Virginia, Sophora from Japan, Alisier from Sweden, Cherry tree from Saint Lucia… A park that has its share of surprises in all seasons…
